Warning signs

  • Unsolicited contact from individuals claiming to be law enforcement or government officials.
  • Demands for payment via Bitcoin ATM or cryptocurrency kiosk.
  • Claims that funds are required for 'bond money' or 'government fees'.
  • High-pressure tactics designed to induce panic or urgency.
  • Instructions to keep the transaction secret or not to speak with bank staff.

What you should do

  • Never send money to anyone who demands payment via a Bitcoin ATM.
  • Verify the identity of any caller claiming to be law enforcement by contacting the official department directly using a verified phone number.
  • Be aware that government agencies do not accept payments via cryptocurrency kiosks.
  • If you suspect you are being targeted, hang up immediately and contact your financial institution through their official, verified contact channels.
  • Report the incident to local law enforcement and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
As of October 2026, financial institutions and law enforcement have identified a surge in scams involving Bitcoin ATMs. Perpetrators contact victims, often posing as law enforcement or government officials, and create a sense of urgency regarding legal or financial issues. They then instruct the victim to use a Bitcoin kiosk to transfer funds, claiming the money is for bond payments or government agency fees. Once the funds are deposited into these machines, they are typically sent directly to the scammer and are nearly impossible to recover due to the irreversible nature of cryptocurrency transactions. FBI data indicates that crypto ATM-related fraud has seen significant growth, with hundreds of millions of dollars in losses reported annually.
